Today we're going to talk about Reinforcement more specifically positive And negative reinforcement reinforcement Is basically the way you reward your dog And yes you have to reboot your dog for The behaviors that you want and not Reward your doubt for the behaviors that You don't want more on that in a bit Basically positive reinforcement is when You reward your dog for the behaviors That you want and Native reinforcement Is the not rewarding your dog for the Behaviors that you don't want so I have Shown this concept many times before but If you're new to this concept here's a Demonstration of how do we reward and Implement positive reinforcement and Negative reinforcement so let's say I'm Practicing a reward based behavior that Requires me to reward her but also it Gives me an opportunity for her to learn A behavior so I'm going to ask her to Sit [Music] Stay so she's in a stay command and this Is a behavior that I want I want her to Stay And if she stays for 10 seconds her Positive reward would be a place so She's gonna play with the ball she's Gonna go and interact with the ball or With me that we are playing in this game Right so I'm gonna play with her And that was for 20 seconds of stay now
I can ask her again to sit Stay Ask her to stay for 30 seconds and if She does that then I will reward her for The behavior that you gave me so now it Has been about 20 seconds and let's say On 25 seconds she breaks it there so I'm Not gonna interact with her and I'm not Going to reward her because she broke The command she broke the behavior that I wanted after 25 seconds so she doesn't Get any interactions from me she doesn't Get to play and she doesn't get reward That's called negative reinforcement so I'm not going to be aggressive I'm not Going to be You know making a scene or anything like That because she didn't give me that Behavior all I'm gonna do I'm gonna Encourage her to give me the behavior That I want so and again I'm gonna ask Her to sit once again and ask her to Stay and we're gonna go for 30 seconds Of stay camera And this is where understanding dogs and Understanding the concept that a dog has To learn the concept of reward maybe if I cooperate with this human then I'll Get rewarded that's how the Reinforcement is working in here giving Us results because she is learning that You know if I comply with the behavior That this human is asking then I get Rewarded that's more than 30 seconds and
I'm gonna reward it good girl go get it And again she gets rewarded and gets an Interaction with me now This is when a behavior is being taught This is when I'm in control and she's in Control and the environment is in Control situation and we're teaching a Behavior now if she makes a mistake or You know if she is aggressive or she's Reactive or anything like that that's Not the term for me to teach positive or Negative reinforcement because it's not In the right mindset to learn positive And negative reinforcement because the Mind is already in a negative state of Mind and then if I try to work on Negative or positive reinforcement I'm Going to complicate and make it a little Bit difficult for my dog to associate And learn so therefore I'm not going to Use positive and negative reinforcement In cases like that there is more In-depth explanation of reinforcement in Dogs which becomes a little bit Scientific and more complicated but I Want to make it a little bit simpler for You so we're just going to stick to Positive and negative reinforcement I'm Going to explain it a little bit more But for that we have to go to my office On my computer so let's do that so we're Back in the office so first of all Understand that the secret to getting The results that you want from your dog
Is basically understanding how dogs Learn and dogs learn by association so Association is basically dogs learn by Associating feelings and emotions Whether good or bad just like humans to The experiences that they experience and Therefore they respond to those so if You have a healthy positive relationship With your dog not only is going to make It easier for you to teach but also it's Going to be easier for your dog to learn So basically positive reinforcement is Allowing the dog to learn or experience Things that to understand that this is Good or this is bad a dog has positive Associations or has negative Associations with that experience so Basically the dog gets what it wants or The dog doesn't get what it wants I'm Going to show you some examples So in most cases I would say dog owners Rely on food to tell the dog that this Is good or not good or dog trainers or Everybody mostly uses food but in my Opinion The best thing that you can start Offering your dog is play or praise or Just simple interactions with your dog Would be the best form of reward for Your dog and overall if you provide your Dog's basic emotional needs you will be Rewarding yourself your down is going to Associate positive feelings with that And the last thing is food but most
People they start using the food and Basically if you want your dog to Associate with negative staff negative Association you're going to be using Force pain or sadness punishment or Being alone Most dog trainers also are using these To teach the dog to stop a certain Behavior which again I don't suggest you To use when you force a dog the dog Doesn't learn when the dog is feeling Pain or sadness or punishment or even Being alone they get stressed and Anxious they don't learn things right so In general positive reinforcement I Would say is when a dog is having some Form of interaction with humans or with Dogs and it's having fun time and is Playing these are all positive Reinforcement especially when a dog's Basic emotional needs has been provided Specially if your dog is spending and Interacting a lot of time with you Now the negative reinforcement is Basically allowing the dog to be left Alone a lot right or left in the crate Or not playing with you or not playing With other dogs over General the dog Doesn't play or doesn't go for walks all These things can cause the dog to become Negative and start associating emotions And feelings to negative reinforcement So I don't want you to get to that level So what I want you to do is start
Providing as much as possible positive Reinforcement and use negative Reinforcement only if your dog is having A hard time to learn and don't use Negative reinforcement when your dog is Making a mistake at the time that is Making mistake Now by simply Understanding this concept this simple Concept you can become a better dog Trainer a better dog owner or better Leader but when it comes to puppies and Adult dogs you have to implement this Concept differently so to learn how to Implement this system to your puppy Click here and to learn how to implement This system to your adult dog click here Foreign
